Yes and no.Big sails and small boards do play a part in speed, mainly because it allows for the board to get planing quickly. When planing, the board skips across the top of the water, with only a small proportion of the board in the water around the fin. Getting on the plane and maintaining that state requires correct body, sail and board position. Speed depends on how much the sail is 'sheeted' in, how flat the board is trimmed, the stance of the windsurfer AND the type/size of board and indeed the size of the sail.
