The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources. Note the gogent word here is..."preceived".
Most Republicans consider themselves an elite group, the delusion here is Prima facie. It would be difficult to locate a more incompetent group of blow-hards anywhere on the planet.
So, an elitist is never elite; they just delude themselves to believe the fantasy.
The term is an insult to the intellectual and a wonderful compliment to the fundamentalist and political neo-con. God save us from ourselves. (pun).
