Gybes - Windsurfing Questions

Question #1:

Can I become an adrenaline junkie?

Like I really want to go skydiving and windsurfing and white water rafting. I'm also quite scared, the notion of doing these things. So this may be a stupid question, is there any way to tone down those fears a bit so i can do all the extreme sports i want to??

Question #2:

How to make the most of this situation lol?

I've been persuaded to give windsurfing a try by a friend...Actually, I'll be honest, it's somebody who I see as more than a friend, which is how I managed to allow myself to be persuaded so easily lol =/

I am looking forward to trying it haha, but I've never tried sailing or anything like that before, and I'm not the most co-ordinated of people...So basically, my question is:
Will I be able to pick it up pretty quickly and have fun with it? Or is my best bet to fall as gracefully as possible and hope that he rescues me lifeguard style?

Thanks in advance for your answers! :) I have posted this before, but wanted more opinions :)
I was only joking about the falling off thing...before I get any more stupid answers.

Question #3:

Is windsurfing difficult to pick up?

I've been persuaded to give windsurfing a try by a friend (actually, I'll be honest, it's somebody who I see as more than a friend, which is how I managed to allow myself to be persuaded so easily lol =/ ).

Question #4:

I have Ivy League questions... please help?

I'm a student from Eastern Europe (Poland) which now belongs to the European Union, which gives us more prospectives. I attend an IB school, I just finished my freshman year and I plan to go to one of the Ivy League universities, if I get in.

1) My academic results have been great so far. I finished with a 6.1 average, out of possible 7.0. I did very good on my final exams, scoring 5/6 and 6/6 on all of them except one, where I had 4/6. I got an award for outstanding achievement in art, math and humanities. I participated in photography club, drawing skills and sets and props club. In the coming years, I'm planning to do even better academically and do even more after school to widen my interests (drawing, painting, writing, learning about medicine, windsurfing, community and service). Do I have chances of getting in based on this? I know it's not the entire thing, but if I continue this way until I'm a senior, would I?

2) I know that I would have to take the SATs apart from my IB exams. How long does the preparation take? Are they hard? I heard you need at least 2100 overall points to enter any Ivy League university. Would I be able to get that with an IB education?

3) I know that Harvard grants you a full scholarship if your family income is less than $60,000 a year. What about other universities?

4) I work quite hard to achieve my results and I have everlasting stocks of enthusiasm and I will work until I achieve what I want. I know that I can work even harder than that to achieve a good score in the SATs. Are those values important to Ivy League? I heard they are.

5) I associate my future with med school, but if I get into an Ivy League uni, I would do something concerning business or economics, maybe human resources or even internal design. I might continue with medicine, I don't know yet.

6) Except for good academic results, a lot of extra-curricular activities, good SAT scores, personal essays and recommendation, what else is there that Ivy League universities appreciate?

THANK YOU! :)

Question #5:

I have university questions about med school. Please help?

I am a student from a Central European country, Poland, which now belongs to the EU. I study in the IB system and I'm aiming for studying at an American university, preferably Ivy League. My questions are:

1) Do I have a chance of getting in?
I have always had very good results academically. I finished my freshmen year with a 6.1 average out of possible 7.0. I did very good in my exams, scoring 5/6 and 6/6 in every of them except one where I had 4/6. I got awards for outstanding achievement in mathematics, art and humanities. I participated in three after-school activities and have a lot of interests like painting, writing, traveling, windsurfing and others. I plan on getting even higher results academically in my sophomore year, also participating in more after-school activities and doing MUN to widen the range of my interests. I've also had a quite interesting storyline of life.

2) What are the financial policies of Ivy League universities?
I heard that Ivy League colleges first accept the student, and then they worry about their finances, and that many students' tuition is covered entirely by the school. Is this true? How does it work?

3) Which of the Ivy League colleges is the easiest/hardest to get into?

4) I plan on either going to med school or interior design, or maybe even a more humanities-related subject if I get into Ivy League. But my biggest area is dental medicine.

5) Currently, I’m in the IB system, which guarantees that you will get into most universities without exams (if you finish, of course). If I get an IB Diploma, do I have to take SATs to get into Ivy League?

6) What are other great universities in the United States or United Kingdom, or generally in Europe, that are on the educational level of Ivy League?

If you've got anything else to add, or you are a graduate of any Ivy League college, please feel welcome to share your thoughts with me.

Thanks!

Question #8:

Kenya Holiday - costs of excursions?

Hi. I'm currently planning a holiday to kenya (mombasa) and was wondering how much it will cost to do various activities while I am there. I would like to be active as opposed to just sitting round by the pool/beach and would like to go for two weeks:

1. Safaris - I have a rough idea of how much safaris will cost (about £200 for 2-3days) and will book when i get there.
2. I would like to get involved in watersports - how much would it be for hire of various equipment? In particular windsurfing - I've never tried this but would like to give it a go and may need tuition first.
3. scuba diving - how much would it be for a dive? and how much to take a padi course?
4. nightclubs - how much for entry into the main clubs - I've heard good things about cassablanca. and how much for drinks?
5. other trips out to nearby villages and other sightseeing days of interest.

Thanks for your replies in advance!
Dean.

Question #9:

simple windsurfing question?

why is it that people can go soo fast with their windsurfs? is it because they have big sails and thin boards?

Question #10:

Water Sports Question?

So summer is here and I wanna do something. I'm thinking of two things: windsurfing and sailing. Sadly, I can't do both so which one is better? Which one requires more strength? Which is generally more fun?Which is less expensive? Which is a lifetime activity? And can you windsurf on any body of water? Which has more competitions and races?

Question #12:

I need help with a windsurfing part?

I am looking for the part that you need on a windsurf that you put the sail into. I don't know anything about windsurfing my friends and I just love water sports and found one for free on craigslist but its missing this part. And i would greatly appreciate it if you add a link on where to buy one thank you very much!

Question #13:

What would I wear for a beginners windsurfing lesson?

The main thing is will I do windsurfing with bare feet, or do I need to wear shoes?

Question #14:

Windsurfing, Kitesurfing, and Kayaking?

I'm actually starting to get an itch for extreme water sports (no fishing lol) and I've ran into Windsurfing, Kitesurfing, Wakeboarding, and Kayaking. Just so you know where I am to start, I'm in South Florida Miami where the winds usually dont blow very much (but from the vids on Youtube, people have managed to do the above) anyway, I was woundering what's the best one to get into for the best price and what might I be paying for any? From what I've read,
Kite: $$$ = Kite , $ = Board
Wind: $ = Sail , $$$ = Board
and I've seen Windsurfing packages for like $1500 and Kitesurfing kites for like $900 no board! Can I get into anyone of these with like $1000 and build on what I have using peices of the old equipment? Is there anything cheaper? Or should I stick with Kayaking ($250 for the one I'm looking at)?

Question #15:

What makes someone an elitist (in the USA)?

I keep hearing complaints about elitists, which seem to refer mostly to Democrats for some reason.

Some of the things I have seen listed as elitist in this country include:

Speaking a second language
Using words with more than 2 syllables
Windsurfing
Liking sushi
Having a college education

None of these are what I would call elitist. I think of elitists as being old money people who own haute couture and a personal jet, attended a private boarding school, have a live-in chef and valet, and talk down their noses at the lower classes. "Elite" (as opposed to "elitist") to me refers to the very best, like an elite military force.

Question #16:

Am I overweight? And why aren't I losing any weight?

Yeah I've asked this question before but I'm a bit worried because I was at a friends house the other day and they had scales, I stepped on out of interest and I was nearly 13 stone(185pounds I think but not sure) -last time I checked I was 11 (about Easter when I had a skiing holiday, need the weight for settings) I was really shocked by this because I wasn't wearing any shoes or anything, literally, all I had on me apart from myself was jeans t-shirt and jacket with my phone in my pocket. My phone's really light so I doubt that without all this I'd even get down to 12.5 stone ANYWAY a bit about me...
I'm 14
I'm 5"7
I'm a girl
I'm not thin I know I'm not haha but I'm not fat either, I'm average but with a bit of a stomach
...anyway am I overweight? According to that doctor chart thing I am quite overweight but I've got quite an athletic build and I do LOADS of sports, it just doesn't seem to do anything and it's starting to worry me because if I don't lose it now it'll get harder as I get older.
Also I don't seem to be losing any, as I said I do loads of sports (swimming, windsurfing, skiing, snowboarding, netball, athletics, basketball.... +stuff at school) I've really cut down on what I eat and cut out all the junk food, I'm drinking green-tea(meant to help or something) I've cut down on the wheat and sugar and I do 90 minutes straight on an exercise bike after school and go out cycling as much as possible, also I walk 1/2 a mile to the bus stop everyday and back in the evening(uphill after school)

Anyway I'm starting to worry because I'm not losing ANYTHING at all, I've nearly gone up a size in clothes and I'm only gaining. Plus my dad's being really annoying and unsupportive, he's lost 2 stone recently and has suddenly turned onto me and my mum calling us overweight and stuff (he thinks he's helping) and it's really off-putting, he's making me feel like I'm doing it for him, not me and my mum's started now as well and they won't listen to me when I say I want to do it alone and I don't want to hurt their feelings :(

Sorry it's so long but please answer x
By the way I drink loads of water anyway -hate "fake" stuff so I never drink rubbish drinks, sensitive teeth stop me from having fizzy stuff but I don't like them anyway- and I never eat processed foods. Plus "Crude Dude" yeah I've slowed down to use the computer but it's ok in my mind because I have the laptop on the handle bars of the exercise bike while I'm using it MULTITASKING FTW ;D

Question #17:

Old made for tv Nickelodeon movie?

Does anyone remember an old (late 90s early 00s) made for tv movie on Nickelodeon. I only remember vague details about it but it was about two kids, I believe brother and sister who lived in a sort of post apocalyptic/ dystopian future/ alternate world. They had a friend who had some kind of fire powers that were never explained.

The basic plot was these three trying to get to a "paradise" made/discovered by their parents. And of coarse the tyrant ruler was also trying to find it, and also had the friend working for him/them at first.

They used a solar powered (I think it was solar powered) windsurfing board to cross the deserts.
It's not Sharkboy and Lava girl, it came out before it.

Question #18:

What sport involves a wakeboarde and a parachute?

I went to the beach the other day and i saw someone, i think, on a wake board with a parachute riding by the wind pulling him. I just wanted to know what this sport is called. I thought it was windsurfing but when i looked up windsurfing, it was something completely different. Please help me out

Question #19:

Windsurfing for waves, what kind of setup should i have. Also, whate are good places for wave surfing in s.f.?

Hi , i am a beginner windsurfer, and i want to do wave/freestyle windsurfing. I am 6' 3" (and growing) and 150 lbs. I was wondering what type of setup i should get sail, board, fins, harness etc. BTW i am on a tight budget. I am also going to be windsurfing in the bay area , half moon bay, coyote point, maybe a littlee santa cruz but my mom probably wont drive me there, so more half moon bay, coyote point, maybe under golden gate bridge or around there? SO also if you guys have suggestions on places to windsurf in the bay area that'd b great.

Question #20:

Windsurfing help please?

I'm looking into getting a windsurfer but all new windsurfers I've looked at are around 700.00 cheapest. Is their a cheaper one just for a beginner. Also, what are the the basic equipment things that I will need to windsurf. Thanks
